Laura Hashimov
English
Mrs. Laura Hashimov (nee Batstone) is an Orange County native whose positive experiences with local, Christian education inspired her to continue teaching in the area today. Mrs. Hashimov attended Vanguard University where she studied English and graduated with highest honors. The small, Christian, liberal arts environment encouraged her love of the English language, and allowed her to be active in all areas of the department, including education, creative writing and literary analysis.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Laura attend the University of California, Irvine and earned her M.A. in English through a program developed specifically for teachers. During her time at UCI, she was able to study literature and pedagogy from her top-tier professors as well as the master teachers alongside her. Her thesis focused on viewing Charles Dickens through the educational concerns of the Victorian era.
While attending graduate school, Laura began as an adjunct professor at Vanguard University, teaching a variety of composition courses for traditional undergraduate and professional programs, including: Persuasive Writing, Research Writing, Modern Grammar and Advanced Composition. These courses encouraged her interest in composition pedagogy and the importance of writing in Christian education for learners of all ages.
Laura began teaching high school English at Capistrano Valley Christian Schools where she eventually became Department Head. During her time at CVCS, she developed curriculum for American Literature, AP Language and Composition, as well as Research Writing. In addition to teaching responsibilities, Laura acted as an advisor for Student Government and California Scholarship Federation. Her time at CVCS inspired her desire to mentor students academically and spiritually through their high school years, having fun along the way.
At Pacifica, Mrs. Hashimov is passionate about developing life-long learners who see the beauty of God through the literature they read and the ideas they encounter. Additionally, she wants her students to articulate their ideas in a manner that is “full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that [they] may know how to answer everyone.”
While not teaching, Laura enjoys spending time with her husband, Elmar, reading, hosting game nights, swimming at the beach, attending concerts, and watching too many movies. She is actively involved in her Costa Mesa church, serving on Sundays and with the women’s ministry. She loves exploring the local Newport/Mesa hangouts, as well as traveling whenever she gets the chance.
