Eric Balmer

Prior to joining Pacifica, Eric Balmer taught philosophy at Loyola Marymount University for eight years. He also previously taught and developed courses at Biola University, Chapman University, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Azusa Pacific University. His desire to be a part of the Pacifica community has everything to do with the mission of the school–to teach students to think and live well.

Eric did his undergraduate work in both history and philosophy at Biola University and California State University, Long Beach where he was honored as one of the few “Distinguished Graduates” of his class. He went on to get a Master’s degree in Philosophy at CSULB and a Master’s degree in Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. Then in 2021, while concurrently teaching at Pacifica, Eric earned his Doctoral degree in Philosophical Theology, also from Fuller.

Prior to his life in academia, Dr. Balmer was a touring musician. He has been to every state in the lower forty-eight, an experience that has shaped his teaching of American History. Eric brings his passion and love for teaching to Pacifica. In fact, he sees his role as a teacher as a calling more than anything else.

Dr. Balmer resides in Long Beach with his wife and three kids. He is an elder at his church. Eric is an avid reader, loves baseball, cooking, and all things Americana.
