The Liberal Arts: Beautiful and Useful

April 10th, 2014

In the preface to The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde wrote, “All art is quite useless”–and he meant it in a good way. A similar claim is often made for or against the liberal arts, the subjects that we study for their own sake because they are interesting or beautiful or culture-building or truth-revealing.
The Pacifica mission is formally expressed in this statement: "Pacifica Christian, a liberal arts high school, is devoted to teaching young men and women to think critically and wisely, instilling heartfelt joy and interest in learning, while encouraging lives of faith, character, and service to the glory of God."
One of many natural results of fulfilling this mission is that graduates are prepared to succeed in college and the workforce. Andrew Benett, CEO of the marketing communications agency Havas Worldwide and author of The Talent Mandate: Why Smart Companies Put People First, explains some of the reasons in this recent article. We encourage you to consider and evaluate Benett’s points.
