Winter Sports Recap

Soccer

Girls Soccer finished its inaugural season with a stunning record of 10-1-2. Although they ended the season with a 2-3 loss - the only loss of the season - they played a highly competitive match against Cypress High School's JV team. More than 100 people attended the game, cheering both teams to play their best. During the course of the season, the Girls Soccer team beat three Varsity programs and outscored their opponents 49-11. That is an average of 3.7 goals scored per game by the Lady Tritons while allowing only 0.84 goals scored against. Congratulations Girls Soccer on on outstanding inaugural season.

Basketball

Boys basketball almost didn't happen at Pacifica this year. The night before the season was to begin, only two students had committed to playing basketball. Not wanting to give up on having a team, Athletic Director, Brandon Gonzalez and Head of School, David O'Neil addressed the student body and explained that without seven players, there would be no boys basketball this season. The next day, eleven boys - many of whom had never played on a basketball team before - showed up to the first practice, securing the future of the school's basketball program and demonstrating the courage and sacrifice these young men are willing to make for the good of their school. Making good on their committment, Pacifica's student-athletes played to their fullest, producing an exciting season full of growth, development and amazing jump shots. The highlight of the season came when the Tritons defeated Sage Hill at home, winning 48-46. The team ended the season against sister school, Pacifica Christian - Santa Monica. The Tritons held their own against the more seasoned Seawolves, coming up just two points short of a victory in the final minutes of the game. The final score was 36-38. That historic game capped off Pacifica's first Wedge Week, five days of camaraderie aimed at building community both on and off campus. The student-led Pacifica Athletics Committee (PAC) and Basketball Coach Jeff Berokoff chose to support The Kids & Dreams Foundation, an organization that provides support to families dealing with autism and bullying. Through their week-long fund-raising efforts, the students raised over $1,300 for the cause, $750 of which came through a coin collection and bake sale, triggering English Chair Rev. Hayden Butler to shave his beard in honor of their accomplishment. “I am speechless!! Completely blown away! First, I just want to thank the Triton basketball team, Pacifica administration, and the entire school community for their support during Wedge Week. The Foundation is honored to be the charity selected to partner with Pacifica Christian and raise awareness for autism and bullying. We are very humbled. Together we WILL make a difference," commented Aaron Bly, Executive Director for The Kids & Dreams Foundation. Wedge Week also included daily lunch-time activities where students and teachers competed against each other in games like basketball, capture the flag and a donut eating contest. The week ended with an all-school dance aboard a Newport Harbor boat.
