Ad Astra Per Aspera
April 7, 2025
Ad astra per aspera
On the weekend of March 28, Pacifica’s young, gritty Junior Classical League (JCL) team embodied the above phrase, which translates to "through difficulties to the stars." A fitting phrase for our team, as they took 3rd place overall in the Small School category at the Junior Classical League State convention.
The two-day event on all things classical featured academic testing, competitive art exhibitions, athletic contests, scholarly lectures, and a plethora of fun activities. Our Triton participants excelled at a number of these rigorous and challenging events.
Reese Holladay won 3rd place in Open Certamen, a jeopardy-style quiz game, and 2nd place in Watercolor Art. Avery Driscoll claimed 1st place in Open Certamen, 3rd place on the Roman History Exam, and 2nd place in Mixed Media Artwork. Lucy La Caze placed 2nd in Mythology, and a late-entry from Kenna Crain was awarded 3rd place in Open Certamen and 2nd place in Pencil Artwork. Kenna also had a worthy effort in the Roman Rap Battle event, where she showcased her lyrical precision. Finally, Sky Taketa placed 3rd in the Large Models art competition and 1st in the Roman Daily Life Exam.
After campaigning at the convention and delivering a riveting speech, Sky Taketa reached for the stars and was elected by JCL members from throughout the state to the position of Vice President of the Executive Board of the California Junior Classical League! A special congratulations to Sky!
The whole weekend was capped with a rousing game of laser tag! Our Tritons truly know how to think and live well.
